B*tch*n About Your Kitchen!
Think
about it. What do you really love about your
kitchen?
- The Color?
- The Furniture?
- The Cabinets?
- The Floor?
- The Counters?
- The Organization?
- None of the above?
Try these simple steps to transform your kitchen!
Step
1: The Organization
How much stuff do you really need? Take a few
minutes a couple of times a day to start tossing. Be
ruthless. Yucky old cookie sheets? Out they
go! 4 spatulas? Come on, do you really use 4
spatulas at the same time when your cooking? Keep
your favorite 2 and toss the others. That extra set
of dishes you really don't like? Off to charity!
You get the idea. The more room you have in your
kitchen the easier it will be to transform it. Take
a few weeks to accomplish Step 1. Don't push
yourself, you will just burn out!
Step
2: The Color
You can paint a standard size kitchen with 1 gallon of
paint. It should run you around $20.00 including a
roller, bruch and paint pan. Consider the colors in
adjacent rooms and choose a paint color that will visually
pull these rooms together. Use a latex semi-gloss
for easy cleaning. Some of the best advise I can
give a novice painter is: paint will always wipe off when
wet. You can be fairly sloppy and simply wipe your
mistakes away with a damp cloth. Also, when you need
a break, wrap your brush or roller in a piece of tin foil
and place it in a plastic bag. Your rollers and
brushes will keep for hours this way.
Step
3: The
Furniture
The usual culprits are the wrong style/color or just too
much furniture. (Our friend Bob had a large fish
tank & stand in his kitchen - withour any fish in it!
What advice do you think I gave him? Bob, if your
reading this, I'm Sorry!) If you don't use it, toss
it. Move it in to a room where it works or give it
away. When it's time for new furniture, consider the
use of the furniture and the size. Bring room
dimensions when shopping th ensure the right fit. Do
you need a solid wood table or will veneer do? Talk
to your sales consultant. They will help you find
the right furniture for your lifestyle. If new is
not in the budget try a makeover! Perhaps you have
inherited your moms' dark pine Colonial dining set Circa
1962. A fresh coat of black, cream or red paint will
bring it into the 21st. Century. Most upholstered
seats on chairs can quickly go from leftovers to cuisine
in a few minutes. Unscrew the seat from the chair,
and cover it in fresh fabric using a staple gun. A
set of 4 takes about 30 minutes.
An
added note...
I have painted my kitchen countertops and floor.
They turned out great! I used enamel and applied a
couple of coats of ployurethane after the paint had
thoroughly dried.
